security not frozen, still all commands aborted

Postby timo on Tue Feb 03, 2009 11:07 am

Hey Everybody,

With my Laptop I cloned my old hard disc 100gb on the new 500 gb hard disc (Sata 2.5, samsung spintpoint M6S HM500LI) with acronis migrate easy.
Old hard disc was inside the Laptop and the new connected with usb case.
Unfortunalety I chose the automatic mode, menas acronis cloned all! the old Partitions proportional to the new disc.

Now I have the problem like a lot other people here in the forum. New hard disc has the size of the old one= 100gb.
Of course i read all the conversations concerning this problem here in forum. And yes I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop with
WinXpSp3.

So I tried Hdat2, as well as MHDD and EStool Samsung, and of course all commands are aborted, because
my Security is frozen. But now I tried to put the Hard disc with its Sata connection to a Desktop PC from Dell,
which Security is not frozen!!!, and still all commands are aborted. Also tried to use MHDD and Samsung Estool.
Everything is failed.

Of course formating the disc doesnt help.

I dont know what to do now. Im getting crazy.
Is there any help? I would be very glad to get some answers soon.
Thanks. Timo

Hi,

if you can make a debug BIX file (Dump/Save to file menu + Save DEBUG data)
create and send me this file.

I don't exactly understand what do you want to do:

- unlock hard drive
- security erase
- restore native size of hard disk
- change partition size

Do you have in Security menu "Security Status: disabled"?

Hey,

I wrote you an email to "hdat2@hdat2.com" with my bix file attached!

Yes I want to restore my native capacity, which was 500.11 gb, now 100 gb.
The Security of my laptop is frozen or disabled.
Just found out that when I connect my samsung sata to Dell Desktop Pc, that it is written there,
that the security is disabled as well. What to do? All commands are aborted!

I just saw, that in Device Configuration Overlay Menu" there is the option "Modify"

Then there is a list and one point of the list is sth. like "security feature set".
There is written: "Disabled". On the right there is written: "Dont Change"
But it is possible to change it to: "Remove".
Might this be the solution?

Thanks a lot

Hi,

thank you for BIX file.
To restore native size of hard disk you should use SET MAX menu and Set Max Address item.
Just press a key "S" to set native size. Do nothing with security.

The Dell MBR calls special code in LBA Sector 3 to re-enable the HPA anytime you boot from the hard disk.
After you unhide the HPA, in order for it to stay unhidden you need to either get rid of the Dell MBR
(so LBA-3 doesn't get called) or you need to disable LBA-3.

I know all this. Sorry, but I pressed "S" to SetMax to its NativeSize
a lot of times on different Computers.
But Hdat2 says "Command abort", press any key" and nothing is changed!

I tried to press "S" in Hdat2 on my laptop and when I connected my samsung hard disc to another desktop PC via Sata.

Security is frozen on both of them, neither "SetmAx" nor "Device Configuration Overlay Menu- Restore" doesnt work:
"Command abort"

Why is the Security frozen? What is responsable for this? The Hard Disc?, or the Bios of the Computer it is connected to?

Security frozen is a command issued from BIOS to preserve of entering any user security commands
(e.g. change password).

Try to change LBA mode (in SET MAX menu) from 48-bits to 28-bits and then press "S".

I think it is a firmware bug of Samsung hard disks.

The last possibility is give this hard disk to any profi (extra money)
or make a RMA for warranty exchange.

CBL !!! You have NO CLUE as to how much time I lost to this friggin issue with my Dell i9400.

Doing the SET MAX *always* failed with an abort. Using a Seagate SATA 250g 2.5" laptop drive. ST9250410AS.

SOLUTION --> Change LBA from 48 to 28, then press S to set it, GREEN success !
Go back to set the max, this time leaving at 48 and pressing S to set, GREEN success !

IOW - you have to do it twice. I have *lost* soooooooo much time over this issue, creating boot cd's and trying all kinds of software to no avail.

P L E A S E - in a future version of HDAT, when you display the error message, also add some text saying "Try setting to 28 first, set, then to 48, set."

Hi,

this problem of changing 48/28-LBA is described on my web (see FAQ question 6).
