Locked Drive

Postby ruelnov on Thu Mar 03, 2005 5:48 am

CBL:

I have a Seagate drive previously used on an XBox and so it's locked with ATA password.

How can I remove this password using HDAT2 on a PC?

Btw, I don't know the ATA password used to lock that drive.

If you don't know this password HDAT2 can not help you. Look at this page
http://www.xbox-scene.net/software/software.php?page=utilities
for TA UnlockHDD utility and some descriptions or http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/lock-hdd.php.

There was also another utility (atapwd, hddunlock etc.). I hope you can find these on internet or i can send these files to you.

Have tried all these utilities, no joy.

They all require a master password to be able to unlock a drive.

Now, I'm looking for a prog that can do SECURE ERASE without asking for a master password. Would you know?

hmm... it's a shame we cannot unlock this drive on a PC.

To unlock it on XBox would be no problem for me, but I have no XBox.

Have tried a well-known and capable SECURE WIPE prog that doesn't ask for a password even if drive is locked, still no joy. HD still locked after the long security wipe.

Any more ideas?

To 99none:

Security is MAX for this drive.

HDUnlock worked, but drive still locked after reboot.

HDDisabl said Device Not Ready.

What now?

hi,
- if this solution don;t working, run next solution to unlock disk
- from terminal Seagate read module 0x25
Code: Select all
0300 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000
0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000
0000 0000 0084 9c56 31b9 c60c f7b9 a7FE
1f48 ee99 350b 0d3d 0000 0000 0000 0000
0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

- but remember , passwd in hdd from x-box is 40 char ASCII.
- from: 0084 9c56 ... to 350b 0d3d.
- use hddunlock
