How to unlock drive to set max native address

Postby Diclidophora on Sat Jul 30, 2005 3:26 pm

I have a Samsung SP1604N drive which holds 160 GB.
The max address was inadvertently set to 33 GB and I need to reset the max address to 160.04 GB as in the original, but cannot reset it with HDAT2 to higher than 33 GB. Obviously I am not using the correct control to allow the alteration.

Please can anybody tell me what to do ?

Thanks

Try Device Configuration Overlay Menu (if supported) and Reset item. Or you can save a DEBUG information's in Save Menu for this HDD and send to me, maybe i would see what's wrong. Sorry for late answer i am too busy at work.

This is not a beginner's question

I have quite a simlar problem (it's an SP1614N). It has a host protected area (HPA) defined and I can't get rid of it. The drive is new, so any trick that would do it, is welcome (the good news is: I have no data to loose :) but the bad news is I have lost 130 GB HD space :( ).

Seems that HDAT2 does not want to do anything on my drive.
I tried already the tricks with unplugging/replugging the power cable of the drive after booting. But all command that may help are aborted.

- in HDAT2 removing the HPA as well as RECOVER in the DCO Menu does not work
- the command "SET MAX Adress" in HDAT2 does not display the correct native MAX adress - in fact it does not allow me to set MAX adress on any value higher then 32 GB
- I tried also low level formatting with SAMSUNG HUTIL, but that won't fomat anything beyond 32 GB.
- I also tried it on two different PC's (with two different Bios's) - with the same results

Does anybody have an idea that may work ?

Any tip may be helpful. I'am also thinking about re-flashing the firmware...

The only thing I'am sure about :
- The drive is jumpered correctly
- the drive is not damaged (could format the 32 GB without problems, passes all tests)
- it is really a 160GB drive (no wrong label). HDAT2 knows it (see maximum LBA section below):

Hi,

could you send me a DEBUG (BIX) file from Save to file menu, please ?

Did you try
- to remove Host Protected Area feature in DCO menu ?
- to set another sector count in DCO Modify ?

With DEBUG BIX file i can tell you (maybe) more.

Best regards

Hello Lubomir,
Thank you for your fast answer.

You find the BIX file here: http://members.aon.at/best/0Y904505.BIX

Trying to remove the HPA in the DCO menu results in the following message:

aborted command
vendor 0h
word location 0h invalid data structure revision
bit location 0b

The sector count in the DCO modify menu is already correct: 312581807, 160.04GB - so I changed nothing there.

So I hope, you can find any hints in the BIX file.

kind regards

Hi Jerry,

sorry for late answer i was a little busy on the last weekend.

Your drive is interesting. I never saw this before.

1. Drive has 1207 errors in SMART summary error log

2. When you see in DCO a correct capacity 160 GB and in SET MAX
you see 33 GB only - it seems a firmware is corrupted.

I don't know exactly where is a problem, i think it's firmware only.
Or try Samsung utility HUTIL from
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/utilities/hutil.htm.

Maybe somebody else knows how to repair it.

I am really sorry i cannot help you now.

It could be that on PCB is short circuit for 32 GB jumper and you will see 32 GB only even you don't have jumpered this drive.
In this matter neither SET MAX nor DCO RESET will set original size of drive.

Best regards.

Hi,

for Samsung try this SW Victoria 3.51 http://hdd-911.com/.

I don't know which problem do you have with Samsung HDD,
if you can send me a DEBUG BIX file (Save to file menu) for on piece
of Samsung.

Thanks,
cbl

when u cannot remove HPA using HDAT2, etc., that means the firmware is corrupted (usually the SMART modules, Defect Lists, or the Security module).

u need a professional HDD repair software to rewrite these corrupted modules, using healthy modules from a donor drive of same model and firmware version.

have fixed plenty of drives having this problem already.

you can try to use Set Max Address Ext command

read ATA-6 or ATA-7 standard http://www.t13.org

if you know Russian, read this article http://hdd-911.com/index.php?option=con ... &Itemid=27

Hi,

In ATA/ATAPI-7 standard is one darkness - It looks to me like if you issue a 28 bit non-volatile SETMAX on a drive with more than 137 GB that there is no way to size the drive back up.

HDAT2 supports Set Max Address and Set Max Address Ext commands
(it is 28- or 48-bit addressing mode). So you can select which command do you want to use (if you got an error for one).

Also you may use Config command (ATA-command B1)
