SAMSUNG HD103UJ - LBA-48 OFF

Postby sadcm on Sun Nov 09, 2008 2:34 pm

This case is quite similar to other I have read on the forum, but even following those instructions or FAQs I couldn't make it work:

I tried estool (low HD access tool from samsung), just for play with it [yes, bad idea]. There is an option that disables/enables LBA48 support, when I used it (estool) I got a warning saying that my HD was going to be cut [yes I did it, again], then I got a abort warning. Result, HD is now 137GB, LBA48 is off and if I try to re-enable using estool I get abort.

Using HDAT2:
DCO menu (first Modify+install or Restore menu item) I get abort command.

I am sending you HDETECT and BIX file by mail.

Some more info from hdparm:

Hi,

yes, this is similar and common problem of Samsung hard disks.
I think they have a bug in firmware and if you remove 48-bit LBA feature set
there is no way (with free SW) to re-enable it.

My recommendation is to claim this hard disk.
Or maybe can you help some profi.

Last one: you can try in DCO Modify remove "Host protected area (HPA)",
if it will successful, try to install 48-bit LBA addressing feature set.

Same error, abort.

My recommendation is to claim this hard disk.

It is still under warranty, so I'll try this, but... mayor problem is that there is data that I whish to recover (I thought I did a backup, but I didn't, you know, one of those days - -)

I have been trying several strategies:
 I am aware that linux does not use BIOS info so my plan is to fake OS that LBA48 is on by compiling modules that controle this, but I am a bit far from this.

 A parallel option is what I am doing at the moment: using testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) I have recreated partitions with full sectors. then I have issued the command:

dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb1 bs=32k

sda2 (second partition where data that Id like to recover, XFS filesystem, Yes, even more difficult !)
sdb1 (created empty partition on second HD, no format)

command is still running, as it is very slow process, but it should be beyond 137GB now with no errors !!
sdb1 is show now as XFS system, so I have some hope that this will work.
What do you think?

Or maybe can you help some profi.

profi = professional?
I guess you mean send HD to someone to fix it, any recomendation?

Samsung Samsung Samsung ... what a hell, the worst is that their support is pretty bad, some FAQ and contact do not answer at all !

Yes, you should self find any (good) profi firm near your location.
You have to make a decision, whether data on hard disk are valuable or not.
Keep in mind, that the repair may not be cheap.

I think it will not work, because hard disk has now a native size of 137 GB,
that means also a sector count.
When the program reaches the limit of 137 GB it will go around, starting at LBA sector 0.
So, I am affraid you will not be able to copy data beyond this (28-bit LBA) 137 GB limit.
Good luck.

It has not work so far, you were right, it just copied 117GB, then stopped. (/dev/sda1=20GB).
I have to find a way to make linux think that HD = 1TB (original size)... or/and LBA48 is on... long term job.
This is going to be full of fun... :D :) :( :? :!: I hope.

Many thats for your soft and for the help !

First of all thanks ahdan_putri for your help, but I couldn't understand very well PC-3000 manuals.

Mr cbl, I left this case apart for a while until this week, I had an idea that I explain.

I bought a second HD SAMSUNG HD103UJ, same model and I did the following try:

I swapped HD-motherboards from NEW-HD to old HD, I noticed that new HD as a newer firmware than old one.
The trick work but LBA48 is still off !!! what the hell !!

I think Samsung uses DDO and I believe this is 'stored' on actual cylinders somewere, am I right?
Is it possible to copy those 'settings' from new HD to old HD?
I have tried under linux with command dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 but nothing happend.

/dev/sdb = new
/dev/sda = old

Please, let me know if I have any chance using this method.

Hi,

the trick with change PCB on HDD is good, but not in this case.
A small part of the firmware of the controller is stored in a chip, and the rest is stored on magnetic disks in the service area (SA) specially taken away for this purpose. This area (cylinders) is unavailable to the user.
(see http://www.smarthdd.com/en/firmware.htm)

So, it cannot help you swap PCB only.
You should give this HDD to any profi company to repair it or make a RMA.
